FAY HELWIG joined the Queensland Womens’ Forum Club in 1975 while living at Dalby and was a member for ten years. Forum specialises in teaching women all forms of public speaking and meeting procedure.
In 1993 Fay and her husband established Das Helwig Haus B&B on the Granite Belt of southern Queensland.
Because Eberhard is German born they gave their business a German name, cuisine and décor to differentiate it from other accommodation providers. If you can’t be the first, be different.
In 1995 Fay was elected as a director to the board of the Southern Downs and Granite Belt Tourist Association.
In 1996 Fay established the Remembrance Field of red Flanders poppies.
In 1997 with the aid of the veterans of the RSL Fay launched the first of several Remembrance ceremonies – the Flanders Poppy Festival of Faith.
Fay created the Red November promotion to attract red tourism coach groups to view her fields of Flanders poppies, taste the red wines and enjoy fresh red cherries strawberries.
Fay was interviewed about her garden and the Remembrance Field by Don Burke for the Burkes Backyard TV series.
In 1998 the journalists of The Sunday Mail newspaper selected Das Helwig Haus B&B as the best Bed and Breakfast home in Queensland.
In the same year SBS TV filmed the Das Helwig Haus Christmas in July Feast for the Australian Food Lover’s Guide.
In 2003 Das Helwig Haus was selected as representative of Multicultural Diversity in Queensland.
In 2005 Das Helwig Haus won the first Queensland Multicultural Award for a Small Business
In 2006 Fay opened a separate accommodation business as a Backpacker Hostel providing accommodation to Korean youth working in the wine vineyards on the Granite Belt.
In 2007 Fay served on a panel of four judges to choose the winners of the Queensland Multicultural Awards for Large and Small Businesses.
In 2009 Fay’s book Wildflowers, wilderness and wine was published by StrictlyLiterary P/L.
Fay is an experienced public speaker, who each year has addressed service clubs and been interviewed for radio and TV.
She has addressed media students at the University of Southern Queensland and spoken to Tourism groups at AGMs and seminars. Since the publication of Wildflowers, wilderness and wine Fay has been in demand to speak at literary luncheons
As a speaker Fay entertains her audience as she demonstrates how they too may build successful businesses by discovering niche markets or recognising the Unique Selling Point of their product or district.
